Ignored Epileptic Prisoner Receives Compensation for Not Receiving Epilepsy Medication
A prisoner who asked repeatedly but was never given his epilepsy medication was awarded $12 million dollars by a federal jury in Chicago, Illinois.
Ray Fox, a 50-year old man, was serving time at Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet, Illinois. He is an epileptic. Fox repeatedly asked the medical technicians for his epilepsy medication. His requests were ignored.
In 2007, Fox suffered a brain aneurysm while in his cell which has left him severely disabled. He now struggles to walk or use the restroom or pounds on his chest uncontrollably. Additionally, Fox was left partially blind, and he is now unable to care for himself and is dependent on his mother for assistance.
Fox’s mother, Rose, commented that “You trust the system to take care of your loved ones and then they abuse them. What happened to Ray should never happen again.”
